Joining The Challenge! – LAST YEARS RECORD IS BEATEN BY OVER 10,000 BAGS!!
The Plymouth Brethren are again participating in the British Heart Foundations Great British Bag-athon challenge. The BHF’s target for this year is One million bags, an inspiring goal. Last year the PBCC became Bag-athon legends when they collected an incredible 2768 bags for the BHF.
With over 300 churches nationwide the brethren teams are rallying with enthusiasm to do all we can to match or if possible even beat last year’s excellent result.
The British Heart Foundation is the UK’s number one heart charity dedicated to fighting heart disease. Coronary heart disease is the UK’s single biggest killer and the BHF are leading the fight against it, and have been doing so now for over 50 years.
With a number of members of the PBCC having experienced heart problems in their own families, and having proven the benefits of the latest research and technology that in many cases has been funded by such charitable actions, the PBCC have great respect for this dedicated charity and are committed to helping their research teams by getting unreservedly involved in this challenge. We realise the vital help that is provided to the charity through every single extra bag that is donated.
You can view the BHF Bag-athon challenge here http://bag-athon.bhf.org.uk/
You can see below a snapshot of where the PBCC are up to in the bag-athon league tables.
And the result?
An outstanding 12,998 bags for the BHF, this is absolutely incredible. Words cannot really describe the level of achievement that this displays. A fantastic display of teamwork and unselfishness makes this a success that will be remembered for a long time.
We will shortly be putting up a new blog to display the final outcome figures and any photo’s we may have!
Many thanks to all who have worked so hard to turn this challenge into an inspirational success for the BHF!!
We look forward to seeing more pictures and further updates as the bag collecting goes on!!

Olrik!
Du kan cum wiv jus’ any ol’ time. Dunna forget to bringa you momma’s best close – dey vill sell for a bommm!!
Good on ya, sounds like fun if we did that i don’t reckon we could get out the doors of our home for the bags!!!!
In one of the schools in Aussie the kids had a jump rope for heart day and raised $12, 000 with just 40 kids. . . Every little bit counts, aye?
Hey sister… that was our school! One lil girl even raised over $2000 by herself! When we gave the cheque 2 the Heart Foundation they said they’d never heard of anything like it b4! :o)
The Plymouth Brethren Christian Church decided to set a mark;
“How many bags can we collect, let’s see – it’ll be quite a lark,”
They counted up what they had got, a year or so before,
And made a target not easily forgot: three thousand and seventy four!
The battle was on, the word went around, the donations flooded in –
If it’s clothes, or books, or games and more, don’t bin them, send them in!
We’re joining the challenge of the BH Foundation and the word is all about,
That the target we’ll meet, all records we’ll beat, ‘cause us legends do carry come clout.
There’s a few bags here at Lords you can collect if you want, consisting of our cricket gear. We’ve decided that raincoats are better suited!!!
Sorry Aussie, better luck next time. Not easy losing is it….
Pretty pleased w/ the way you’ve turned out Mr Bean?!!
Aussie, that’s just not cricket! If your ancestors had stayed in good ol’ Blighty instead of leaping on the convict ships you’d be still here now, and on the winning side! 🙂 Never mind, if you want to play again give you your money’s worth, and whatever the outcome we’ll win (or lose) with good humour! All the best old bean!
386 now!!!!!legend before the wekkend!!!!!!
Hey KE, sure we can hit in by Saturday, no reason why not – the sky’s the limit!
I’d gladly donate but the cost to send across the pond would negate any impact! Doesn’t the BHF have donation chutes that they can place? There are charity bins all over the place over here – paper recycling, clothes chutes – they are emptied every week/month or so by the charity that they are registered to and are locked in the interim so donations aren’t removed without consent. Large items of course won’t fit in a 4 x 4 foot bin but are collected by a truck from the charity. You are doing an amazing job as it is though – keep up the excellent work – 5000 bags is an ambitious endeavour but there are times when competition is a good thing! Healthy competition promotes giving and the poetry & song contest seems to be doing well – keep it up too!!!
Keep up the good work, team! Just found out that BHF will also accept ELECTRICAL WHITE GOODS such as FRIDGES, FREEZERS, COOKERS, DISHWASHERS etc. Let’s broaden our horizons…at this rate we can smash the 5000!!!
we’ve already hit legend with an amazing 566!!!! don’t stop though.. the target is 5000 and that’s another 4434 bags.. we can definitely do it with a bit of perseverance and a lot of clearing out!! 🙂 🙂 Go for it!!!
I hope everyone’s remembering to fill in their details on the bags so BHF can claim Gift Aid – which bumps the value of the donation up by a massive 25%!
WELL DONE!!! You did it. I’m inspired by your commitment.
Keep it up
i can’t see… please open it for us
Hey I just saw that we are at 386 – well on the way to our target of 5,000!!!!
Keep going everyone – a carrier bag will do or just one item such as a chair or a mirror counts as 1 bag. So keep on clearing out your stuff – you’ll feel a lot better afterwards!!
We’re simply bags ahead of the rest!
Quack, that’s not a heart call to make. I think we would all agree that we’re going to carry-on until we beat all records, and only then can we afford to pack up and hit the sack – when we have a case to stop!
🙂
funny puns 😀
I’m glad they ticker’ed your fancy!
don’t bag them out whatever you do…
I reckon. I’ve gotta swag full of them if you want anymore =D!
Quacking progress isn’t it! I don’t want to duck issues but I think we can say so far so good, and as for hitting the target, I think it’s already as good as in the… bag
Your right Honk, we won’t get the sack yet! Plenty more to do.
I must agree Quack and Mallard, and I must add that its a very pheasant thing to do something for someone else for once, and I geese everyone else must agree.
Anyway, bag to business; I think that we’re going to parc’el records – even if we don’t, we certainly pack some punch anyway!
I agree, the numbers have flown skywards since a week ago, talk about a stork contrast to 386 bags! Let’s not crow about our victories yet, and not a cheep about stopping until we get there, however close we may be to the finish! Keep an eagle eye on those bag numbers, and remember to ‘owl out encouragement to all the other baggers! Now we’ve got this far it’s no time to chicken out, but to talk turkey right to the last moment, otherwise our goose will be cooked! And don’t forget the count isn’t finished until the last bag has safely swanned home to roost. Only then can we tweet ourselves to a break…
hoho you’ve caused a few twitters back here! you really are quite a hoot!
we are going to beak all records and we’ve definitely got the pluck to keep going.
we’ve got an eggcelent result so far – it’s no yoke – we get there allwhite!
anyway enough of these corny puns for today hay?
Things are getting a bit of a chirpy here! Yes, we need not crow about what we’ve done yet, but we sure can parrot the news around – the only cost being involved is using the petrel to and from the local BHF shop!
We need all supporters possible to meet our target! All you cranes and gumps out there who think your too good or too busy to support this grouse cause, stop acting like a pack of galahs and get stuck in. There are people donating by the sparrow full.
Come on. Lets pullet together and beak the target. We can smash our gull!
hey everyone, theres no ducking out of your responsibility…..get quacking and fill those bags….watch the target fly past as we continue to swim our way through spare clothes….
😉
I’ve got my chair back!!!! 75 bags just gone on the van!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
For the British Heart Foundation,
Granny gave it all she’s got;
Showed her true determination,
Filled her lounge with bags – a lot !
Bags and bags piled to the ceiling,
Gramps had nowhere now to sit !
Good old Granny can’t help feeling,
She’s a public benefit!
(Can be sung to Blaenwern 8.7.8.7.8.7.8.7)
Grandma Swagg, when the cry for bags came,
Was pushing a pram up the road.
It was piled high with loot,
And donated to boot,
A thoroughly generous load.
“Hallo, hallo” said the BHF man,
“Now then, what’s going on here?”
“Not much, young man,”
Said public-spirited Gran,
“We’re just having a clear-out, dear”
Chorus:
And the toys? Oh they came in by the pack
By a BHF truck with a forklift on the back
While the British Heart Foundation searched day and night,
For an elderly lady of medium height
Who could hardly be seen for coats, gloves and furs,
With a habit of giving what’s really hers.
She usually carried a sizeable bag;
Her name, of course, was Grandma Swagg.
Adapted version, apologies (and thanks!) to the original author.
Can be sung to “Pack Up Your Troubles in Your Old Kit Bag”, with imagination.
We’re at 297 bags now!! keep it up guys……..we’ll soon have enough bags to reach to the moon if we stacked them all up!
Do you literally reckon that we could touch the moon, you can’t be serious, can you??
Of course we can ‘Cleverme’ – that’s the power of positive thinking!!
The Moon is so close compared with the Sun!
If the average height of a full bag was about 1 metre, we would need about 384,400,000 bags to reach to the moon.
Not quite there yet then.
Sounds good – just make sure you post a picture of how you manage to stack them all up!!!!!!!! I agree, well done, the power of positive thinking is absolutely incredible!!!
Cleverme, your logic is faultless, but:
Haven’t you heard of the expression “The sky’s the limit”? That’s one of the joys of the English language – the ability to express yourself in wildly exaggerated terms in a way that everybondy understands! I mean… there must be millions of people watching the bag numbers go up, when we do finally reach the 5000 mark (the likelyhood of this happening is probably 10 000 000 000 000 000 000 to one – similar to hitting the side of a barn with a snowball at three feet) there will be so many celebrations the noise will be heard from the moon, etc.
I’m sure you know what I mean.
Keep ’em bags coming!
Thats excellent Positive Thinker – how about spending the same amount of time collecting bags as you did writing that reply?!?! We would surely be at 5000 by tonight!!!
Sorry Cleverme, that short piece was done in less time than it would take for a bag to be filled. Have you seen the latest bag count? Thanks to everyone’s efforts, we’re gonna smash the target!
Errmm, Bag Man – I know what you mean. Actually, given the latest figures, I don’t think you’ll be far out in your estimation. Every day is a new surprise:)
we’re about a 3840th of the way to the moon if you reckon on a bag being a meter tall. but if we wait for the lunar perigee then we won’t need quite so many bags.
And we’re now at 297 – can we hit 1000 by friday? Let’s keep bagging folks – it’s amazing!
you may heard – a challenge is on!
the great BHF and its bagathon

keep up the good work!
262 bags so far! And plenty more to go! Well done team – we’re going to smash it and pull out all bags to support this worthy cause!
WAHEY! thats brilliant! 🙂
Is there anyone collecting in Peterhead area? Would like to support this worthy cause and bump up the numbers!
there should be -you could try contacting the local PBCC from the contact details on the main website, there will be someone in peterhead PBCC who is collecting them.
I can’t get near my favourite chair – the whole place is full of bags!! Must be around 50 of ’em at the mo….
Watch out Gramps…The chair might go with the bags!!
I see the count is at 1552 bags! No stopping now!
This granny is a legend! Her house must be empty by now? How about having a collection to buy an armchair for the Gramps who is about to lose his “seat”? 🙂
Bags from Sweden? Hey that’s an idea – just in case we can’t find 5,000 bags in the UK!! Get ready to bring ’em lad! Mind you, I’m not sure if old Swedish flip-flops would sell in the shops here!
