Lake Vyrnwy Bike Ride in aid of Sarn Recreation Association
Focus School Newtown Campus is based in Mid Wales in the small village of Sarn attended by members of the PBCC in Newtown and Shrewsbury. During the school year of 2012/2013, the students saw an urgent need in the village for funds to repair the tennis courts and re-surface the village hall carpark. These facilities are widely used by the villagers and the students for a variety of events.
The school council set their targets high and brainstormed the most feasible way of raising this money. Finally the decision was made to do a sponsored bike ride around the Lake Vyrnwy Reservoir which is approx 11.75 miles round.
Students of the school council spent the next 2 to 3 months planning this event down to the smallest detail to ensure the day ran smoothly. All students from Yr 6 to Yr 13 were included in this event. The school council arranged a catering team for the event, a team of adults to supervise the students, refreshment teams, first aiders, and co-ordinated the gathering of sponsors.
Students were encouraged to get sponsored by individual members of the brethren and also from outside the community. PBCC Businesses nationwide and locally were also willing to show their support and contributed generously.
Despite being postponed once or twice due to heavy snow, on the 25th April 2013 the day had finally dawned!!
42 students
4 school buses
28 helpers (Including the catering team)
3 Vans
5 Marquees……and lots of food and refreshments, congregated at the lake.
2008 miles were cycled in one day in a total of 170 laps. One enthusiastic student cycled 7 laps of the lake which is approx 82 miles raising £814.50!!
The day was an amazing success raising £15,100.47 (including gift aid) with the largest single sponsor of £500.
Once the gift aid had been claimed, the students were finally able to present the cheque to two members of the Sarn Recreation Association on 7th April 2014.
